Who Needs Who

After reading the soloist I feel even stronger about my previous post. A person, like Nathaniel, can be happy with the few possessions he has. A person, who wouldn’t be thought of as happy, lives a happier life than the person who is thought to have a great life. In this case, Nathaniel’s life didn’t seem that great while Steve’s did. In reality, Nathaniel was so much happier with his life than Steve was.
In this book, Steve did a great thing for Nathaniel by trying to help him. Although Nathaniel was happy with his life, Steve still tried to help him. However, in reality I think that Steve needed Nathaniel more than Nathaniel needed Steve; although they both needed each other.
Nathaniel was happy and content with his life and didn’t think he needed Steve to help him with anything. However, deep down he needed someone to love him and care for him the way that Steve did. So although he didn’t need the kind of help that Steve was trying to give him, Steve gave Nathaniel a friend, and that’s all he needed to complete him.
As far as Steve needing Nathaniel goes, Steve was never focused on anything more before he met Nathaniel. Nathaniel took up most of his time and Steve become obsessed with Nathaniel. There came a point where he just couldn’t stop caring because he would constantly wonder where Nathaniel was and how he was doing. Besides Steve’s obsession, Nathaniel taught Steve some things that I too learned from reading this book. Steve learned not to take things for granted and to appreciate the little thing in life. He saw how happy Nathaniel was and realized that it doesn’t take much. He also realized how important his family was. By being away from them so much, he treasured the times he was with them more. He also learned that people with mental disabilities are still people.
All in all, Steve helped himself by trying to help Nathaniel. He learned simple life lessons and made a great friend. He realized that things aren’t always as they seem.

Happiness

In chapter fourteen of this book Lopez realizes why Nathaniel doesn’t want his help. He always wondered why someone would want to live the way Nathaniel does by choice. He lives in the streets when he could have a perfectly nice indoor room to live in. Lopez realizes that although Nathaniel’s conditions don’t seem appealing, he is happy.
Lopez then thinks about all of the burdens that he has as opposed to the carefree lifestyle of Nathaniel. Nathaniel doesn’t have any bills to pay, any jobs to go to or any people to please. He does what he wants when he wants, and that’s mostly to play his music. He not only enjoys himself while playing his instruments, but brings enjoyment to others as well.
The way that Nathaniel lives, to me, is a great way to live. I’m not saying that I want to live on the streets, but I do think that being carefree the way that Nathaniel is, is a lot better than the way Steve is. A lot of people may have money and success, but that doesn’t mean that they are happy. Nathaniel doesn’t even have a home, yet he is happy. A good way to live life is to enjoy the simple things and to make the most of what you have.
Although Steve feels that what he is doing is better for Nathaniel, which may not be the case. Nathaniel has been living his life perfectly fine and Steve is changing everything for him. I’m still not sure if the change is good or bad. Although Steve is trying to take Nathaniel’s happiness away at the time, he is trying to make him even happier and better off, we just have to hope that Nathaniel realizes that.
However, I think that the meeting of Steve and Nathaniel is beneficial to both of them. Steve has never been more committed to something before and Nathaniel has never been cared about so much. They both need each other even though they barely know each other. It’s better not to question why or how they need each other, it just sort of happened. Even though Nathaniel was happy, now he has a friend and that’s something he needed and Steve is learning so much and putting his heart into Nathaniel.

Becoming Attached

Chapters seven through twelve of this book shows a progression in how much Steve is starting to care about Nathaniel. The connection between the two goes beyond work for the newspaper. Although he is not completely missing out on time with his family, Steve is beginning to spend all of his time either with Nathaniel, or worrying about Nathaniel.
Steve began to really care when he spent the night with Nathaniel on the street. He wanted to go to see what was so great about where he lived that he didn’t want to go to lamp, however this action pulled the trigger and got Steve completely hooked on Nathaniel. He then starts to book him shows and Nathaniel starts to get a little famous.
Nathaniel, however, doesn’t like his fame. He doesn’t like all of the attention. He prefers to play on the street on his own time. He doesn’t like to get all dressed up. He doesn’t like to be watched so closely or analyzed while playing. He also doesn’t want any medical help for his condition. He tries to avoid talking to doctors.
Steve grows worried when the city decides to “help” homeless people, especially ones with mental conditions. He knows that the people will try to help Nathaniel but he also knows that Nathaniel will not want to be helped and will put up a fight. He doesn’t want this to happen and grows worried. He also adds suspense to the book.
Steve wonders why he is so intrigued by Nathaniel. I think that it’s because although Nathaniel has a mental condition and is simple minded, he’s still very independent and an excellent musician. He’s not really close to anybody and subconsciously, Steve wants to be the one person that Nathaniel opens up to and really trusts. Steve has probably never met a person like Nathaniel and wants to learn as much as he can about him, like the way he thinks and feels about just about everything and how he sees the world. He also may feel obligated to stay with him since he took him this far already and he doesn’t want to give up now. Either way, Nathaniel is a very interesting character.

The Soloist

Chapters 1-6 of the Soloists are a great introduction to the rest of the story. Steve sets up how he first saw Nathaniel and how his interest in him was sparked. It shows how his interest continued and how he became more and more attached to him.
Steve Lopez is a writer for the newspaper who lives in New York. One day he comes across a homeless man who is playing a violin with only two strings. He immediately thinks that this man would make a great story for the newspaper. He talks to the man and finds out that his name is Nathaniel, and is a former Julliard student and has a mental disability. He contacts the man’s sister and a former teacher to find out how he got where he was.
After writing his first article about Nathaniel, he finds out that this story is a hit. People call Steve to ask about Nathaniel and other people wish to send Nathaniel new instruments. Since Steve wants to get Nathaniel to eventually live in this homeless shelter, he tells him that the only way to get his instruments is to go there and Nathaniel eventually goes to play them. It will, however, take ore time to get him to sleep there.
The two talk more each day and Steve starts to want to talk to Nathaniel simply for the joy of talking to him, although he still cares about his story. Steve goes to a mental institution to find out more about Nathaniel’s mental disability and if there is anyway to treat him. The doctor tells him that treatment doesn’t always work and there are so many people with the same condition, schizophrenia.

The Catcher in the Rye

The Catcher in the Rye

“The Catcher in the Rye” by J.S. Salinger is about a boy who tells his story. This boy, Holden, flunks out of every school he goes to and seems to move on rather quickly. When he flunks out of his most recent boarding school, he doesn’t want to go home right away because he knows his parents will be disappointed. To avoid facing them, he goes on a little adventure in New York for a few days. He stays at a hotel, dances with girls and really starts to enjoy this way of life. He sneaks in one night to talk to his sister, Phoebe. He then decides to run away for good and never return home. Phoebe wishes to join him, but he tells her that she can’t and then spends one last day with her.
I think in Holden’s mind he was too mature to go to school and didn’t think it was necessary. He feels that with one of his brothers dying and another being so successful, he was ignored as a child. Since he feels this way, he probably developed and attitude that made him just not care about anything or take anything too seriously. He’s flunked put so many times that he’s gotten used to it and just goes with the flow wherever life takes him.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I liked the way that it was written so that it felt like Holden was actually speaking to me. It was also amazing to think that Holden was only sixteen years old. I enjoyed reading about his adventures and listening to what he had to say about certain people. This book is very different than the type of books that I normally read, but I enjoyed it just as much. Reading this book made me want to travel the streets of New York, but I wouldn’t be able to do it because I don’t have a mind as nonchalant as Holden’s.
The title of this book refers to when Holden says that he wants to be The Catcher in the Rye”. He means that he wants to catch everybody who is running away from something, people who run so far that they fall off of the cliff and into the rye. People may think that Holden is one of these people because he is running from the fear of disapproval from his parents and from the pressure to do well. However, I don’t think that Holden is one of those people. Holden isn’t exactly running, he just enjoys his life better on his own; also because Holden doesn’t need to be caught, or helped. He is experienced at running from things and feels that he can help those who aren’t.

The Death of a Salesman

Death of a Salesman
Dreams and Success
Many people have big dreams, but few people are able to have their dreams come true. However, although all of a person’s dreams didn’t come true, that doesn’t mean that that person doesn’t have a good, successful life. A person who works hard to achieve their goals and make their dreams come true, usually go on to have bigger dreams. I think that dreams are meant to stay dreams. If everyone’s dreams came true, they would interact and interfere with one another and would just cause complications. A person who doesn’t try so hard to make their dreams come true, will be happy with what he/she has instead if always wanting more.
I don’t think that Charlie is one hundred percent right when he says we are only worth what we can sell. However, I do think that how far a person can go depends on how far they are willing to push. A person’s vision of a better life is determined by how badly they want it and how much they are willing to try. Some people do have to try harder than others, and most people won’t get the exact lifestyle that they want; but having a good life is mostly about be happy for what you do have and not always having bigger dreams. A person is not only worth what they can sell, a person is worth what they believe they are worth and how far they are willing to push themselves.
Willy’s hopes and dreams are just like everyone else’s. I don’t blame him for wanting to be respected. I don’t think that there was a specific time when Willy went wrong. Nothing in particular stood in his way. He was a successful businessman, but he just wanted to become more successful. He kept on trying to make a better life for himself until he just couldn’t take it anymore. His dreams were so big that his good life seemed bad compared to them.
Willy cheats on Linda so that he can feel better about himself. He feels that if he has another woman besides his wife that will make him more respected and better off. He tries to raise his sons so that they will be as successful as he wants to be. He pushes them to follow their dreams and to focus on becoming great. He doesn’t think that they will be happy unless they are that successful and he tries to teach them that.
All in all, Willy Loman is just like anybody else. He dreams of success and spends his whole life trying to be the best. He would have to been happy to live his life and enjoy his family, but he was trying too hard to make his life better. To die the Death of a Salesman means to be pushed by yourself so far that you can’t take it anymore, and that’s exactly what Willy did.

Using Blogger

Camille Franchine
March 30, 2009
Being a Writer

Has blogging been valuable to you as a student, thinker, reader, and writer?

Yes, blogging has been valuable to me as a student, thinker, reader, and writer. I like the way I can comment on other peoples work and they can comment on mine. This lets me see how other students did the same assignment that I did and let’s me see their ideas. It is also good for me to get comments from others. I like to see the different opinions that people have on my writing. Seeing other works and getting comments on mine both help me to be a student and learn how to improve my work. Something that I thought sounded good, might not be as good as I thought it was and I like it when people let me know that. Blogging has helped me to learn how to become a better writer and to see different aspects on the things that I read.

What have you taken away from taking this approach to submitting writing for a class?

Taking this type of approach to submitting work for a class has been beneficial to me. It is teaching me more on how to use the Internet without being overwhelming. It helps me to be able to figure things out if the Internet isn’t working right. So, not only does this improve my writing skills, but also it improves my computer skills and my problem-solving skills.

How do you feel about doing and continuing to do this kind of work?

I feel that it would be a good thing to continue to do this type of work. I feel this way because of al the reasons mentioned above. I also like this type of work because it saves a lot of paper and it eliminates the trouble of having to hand in an actual paper each week.

Is this work different from other experiences that you have had in English classes?

This work is very different from work I’ve had in previous English classes. None of the other English classes that I have taken used and online method of handing in work. All papers were on paper. I have also never really been challenged as much in an English class as I am now. It’s not necessarily difficult; it just requires more thought and effort than any other English class that I have ever taken.

Looking forward, do you have suggestions for how you want to be graded on this writing?

I feel that the writing posted on blogger should be graded just as if the same writing were handed in on paper. I think that if the student follows the prompt and is clear with his/her writing, they should do okay. If the student expresses good ideas through writing and shares that with other students, that person should get a good grade.

Has doing this work changed the community within your own class or between classes (11-1 and 11-2) in any way?

Yes, I feel that using blogger has changed the community within and between the classes. The change isn’t all that significant, but it is still there. Blogger has gotten me to know what people that I don’t normally talk to on a daily basis think, and how they write. It could help students realize what they might have in common with another student that they didn’t think they had anything in common with. Not only does blogger help to improve writing skills and save the trees, it also helps students to make friends.

Fitzgerald's Quotes

Analysis on Quotes

F. Scott Fitzgerald said some very wise things while writing to his daughter as well as in other writings. His words have deeper meaning than what seems to be the literal meaning. Also, he says things in many words, which can be interpreted in simpler words.
He says, “Often I think writing is a sheer paring away of oneself leaving always something thinner, barer, more meager.” I think that he is saying that in a person’s writing, they include a part of themselves. When a person writes something, they can’t help but to leave a little of themselves in it.
He also says, “Riches have never fascinated me, unless combined with the greatest charm or distinction.” I think that by this he means that money doesn’t mean much to him. He doesn’t care if a person has a lot of money or not. He only cares if the person has a good personality. Whether a poor person, or a rich person has a good personality, he will like that person.
He also says, “A great social success is a pretty girl who plays her cards as carefully as if she were plain.” By this, I think that he means that beauty will only get a person so far. Someone who is pretty may have a little advantage at first, but after getting to know people, they may not be liked. People who are pretty have to be just as careful as people who are not about who they trust.
All in all, Fitzgerald has a lot of great words that inspire his writing. They also inspire me. Although these quotes have simple meanings, they are aspects of life that I find to be true. Fitzgerald was a wise man and had great things to say.

The Great Gastby

Camille Franchine
The Great Gatsby
Journal
Chapter one

The first chapter of this book begins with Nick Carraway introducing himself. He talks about his judgment of people and what his father taught him. He then talks a little about the main character of the story, Gatsby. He describes Gatsby as a “gorgeous’ person.
Nick then talks about his home in West Egg, New York. West Egg is for people who just became rich and need to get used to it while East Egg is filled with people who have been rich and have rich attitudes. We find out that Gatsby lives next door to Nick in West Egg.
Nick decides to take a trip to East Egg and visit his cousin, Daisy Buchanan, and her husband, Tom, whom Nick went to Yale with. They are very sophisticated people and have a three-year-old daughter. Daisy’s friend, Jordan Baker is visiting with the Buchanans. While they are eating dinner, Tom gets a phone call from a woman in New York. When Daisy follows Tom inside, Jordan tells Nick that the woman is Tom’s girlfreind. After Jordan goes to bed, Tom and Daisy try to convince Nick to ask her out. Nick goes home and sees Gatsby for the first time.

Charles Simic- Fork

Charles Simic- Fork

1. Charles Simic was born on May 9th 1838 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. His childhood was during World War 2. He didn’t speak English until he was fifteen years old. In 1958 he and his family moves to Chicago. He began to make himself noticed in the 70s. He has published over sixty books, twenty of which we wrote himself. “Critics have often referred to Simic poems as ‘tightly constructed Chinese puzzle boxes’”. During his career he wont the MacArthur Fellowship Award, The Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, The Wallace Stevens Award and more.
2. This poem was difficult to understand at first. However, after closely reading it I realized that Simic is comparing a form to a bird. You stab your food with a fork, and a bird that is a cannibal, catches their prey with their claws on their feet. This poem has no rhyme scheme but still flows. This poem is short, but very descriptive. It is confusing to read because at first, you don’t know if Simic is talking about a bird or about a fork. After you realize he is talking about how a fork resembles a bird, it makes a lot more sense.
3. Simic’s poem, “Old Couple” was much easier to understand. It is describing how an older couple feels like it’s the end of the world for them and all they have is each other. They sit at home and wait for something bad to happen to them while they stare out the window. Then they go to sleep for another night, not knowing if it will be their last.
Another poem by Simic is called “The Wooden Toy”. It is separated into five parts. The first part is describing what the wooden toy looks like. It is a horse with a string and four wheels that a child could be pulled on. The second part is about a kid who finds the toy and thinks that it is a great treasure. The third part is about how the toy has hurt someone. The fourth part is about how the toy is missed and the last toy is saying that the toy is sitting there so quietly. This poem was also a little difficult for me to understand.
4. “Fork” can distinctly be an American poem because the bald eagle sounds like the bird that the fork was being compared to. A bald eagle is the bird of America. “Old Couple” is American because a lot of Americans have bad attitudes. The old couple mentioned in the poem is sitting there waiting for something bad to happen to them, instead of just being happy to still be alive and together. “The Wooden Toy” is American because a lot of American children like toys and use them until they get hurt, although this is probably true in other countries as well.

Fork

by Charles Simic

This strange thing must have crept
Right out of hell.
It resembles a bird’s foot
Worn around the cannibal’s neck.

As you hold it in your hand,
As you stab with it into a piece of meat,
It is possible to imagine the rest of the bird:
Its head which like your fist
Is large, bald, beakless, and blind.

Old Couple

by Charles Simic

They’re waiting to be murdered,
Or evicted. Soon
They expect to have nothing to eat.
In the meantime, they sit.

A violent pain is coming, they think.
It will start in the heart
And climb into the mouth.
They’ll be carried off in stretchers, howling.

Tonight they watch the window
Without exchanging a word.
It has rained, and now it looks
Like it’s going to snow a little.

I see him get up to lower the shades.
If their window stays dark,
I know his hand has reached hers
Just as she was about to turn on the lights.

The Wooden Toy

by Charles Simic

1

The brightly-painted horse
Had a boy’s face,
And four small wheels
Under his feet,

Plus a long string
To pull him by this way and that
Across the floor,
Should you care to.

A string in-waiting
That slipped away
In many wiles
From each and every try.

2

Knock and they’ll answer,
Mother told me.

So I climbed four flights of stairs
And went in unannounced.

And found a small wooden toy
For the taking

In the ensuing emptiness
And the fading daylight

That still gives me a shudder
As if I held the key to mysteries in my hand.

3

Where’s the Lost and Found Department,
And the quiet entry,
The undeveloped film
Of the few clear moments
Of our blurred lives?

Where’s the drop of blood
And the teeny nail
That pricked my finger
As I bent down to touch the toy

And caught its eye?

4

Evening light,

Make me a Sunday
Go-to meeting shadow
For my toy.

My dearest memories are
Steep stair-wells
In dusty buildings
On dead-end streets,

Where I talk to the walls
And closed doors
As if they understood me.

5

The wooden toy sitting pretty.

No, quieter than that.

Like the sound of eyebrows
Raised by a villain
In a silent movie.

Psst, someone said behind my back.

Journal on Willa Cather

Camille Franchine
March 2, 2009
English 3
Mr. Fiorini
Journal on Willa Cather

1. These stories differ from stories of American romantics stories. American Romantic stories are about the achievements of misunderstood heroic people. Romanticism is the opposite of Realism. These Realism stories are about misfortune. “A Wagner Matinee” is about a woman who spent her whole life working and when she finally gets enjoy something; it has to end so quickly. “Consequences” is about a man who has a friend that no one else sees who makes his past seem so dark until he commits suicide. These stories aren’t happy or sweet or about the hero saving the day. The progression that has come from Romanticism to Realism is that writers became more realistic and started to write stories that people can relate to when they read them.

2. A social topic that was taken up in “A Wagner Matinee” is about how the aunt spent her whole life working and never got to experience life. She was so happy just to see the show because she spent way too much of her time working on her farm, which I don’t think is healthy for any person. This is maybe telling us that Cather didn’t get out much and enjoyed the simple things in life instead. “Consequences” is about a man who got out very often. However, although he had a wide range of a social life, he was still unhappy and psychologically unstable. This is maybe showing Cather’s opinion on people. She might feel that No matter how happy a person’s life may seem, everyone may be battling some kind of internal and personal conflict.

3. I feel like in both of Willa Cather’s pieces that I have read, she is writing to anyone who is interested. She is writing for herself and for anyone who feels the same way that she does. She is trying to voice her opinion and show people how people from different walks of life are all still people. Everyone has their own problems and has their own way of dealing with them. She is trying to show society this through her writing. She does this for everyone who feels the same way, and for everyone who is dealing with an inner problem and needs to know that there are a number of people who can relate.

4. “A Wagner Matinee” is relevant to me because I can relate to Aunt Georgina. I would like to have a life with routine and order, but then I would also want to travel the world and experience new things. She was so caught up in her work that forgot about the things in life that she enjoyed. This story is a reminder to me to not let that happen. Life will pass a person by without the person realizing it. This story helped me to remember to live life first, before settling down and working all the time.
“Consequences” wasn’t really relevant to me, although I enjoyed the story. I don’t have a carefree life or imaginary friends. I can’t personally relate to it, however it did put things into perspective. It showed me that although some people seem to have the perfect life without a care in the world, they might have bigger problems than I could imagine. They might not always be internal, they could be family related or love related, etc. This story just showed me that although some people seem to be happy, they could always be hiding something drastic. In a way, then, I guess I could relate to this story because I hardly show my emotions and a lot of times no one can tell when something is wrong, however, I never have something that is extremely troublesome.

5. “Eastman went into Cavenaugh’s sleeping-room. When he came back to the sitting-room, he looked over the writing table; railway folders, time-tables, receipted bills, nothing else. He looked up for the photograph of Cavenaugh’s twin brother. There it was, turned to the wall. Eastman took it down and looked at it; a boy in track clothes, half lying in the air, going over the string shoulders first, above the heads of a crowd of lads who were running and cheering. The face was somewhat blurred by the motion and the bright sunlight. Eastman put the picture back as he found it. Had Cavenaugh entertained his visitor last night, and had the old man been more convincing than usual? ‘Well, at any rate, he’s seen to it that the old man can’t establish identity. What a soft lot they are, fellows like poor Cavenaugh!’ Eastman though of his office as a delightful place.”

This is the last paragraph of “Consequences”. I felt like this ending was very confusing. Eastman is in a room where Cavenaugh has shot himself and is looking at the picture of his twin brother who died at the age of sixteen, yet he find his work to be a delightful place. The type of language that is used throughout the story is very different than the modern day English that I’m used to. However, this story was very entertaining and was very descriptive as well as “A Wagner Matinee”.

What drew me to this author were the plot summaries that were given before we got a chance to pick our author. These stories both sounded very interesting. Also, when I was reading through them, I liked the descriptive language, which gave me a good image of what was going on and made me want to read more of it.

Writing in Society

Writing in Society

I would think that writing does have the power to enact social change. Writing is a form of speech. People can speak their thoughts and feelings just as well as they can write them. Writing can sometimes be more effective than speaking. When a person speaks their thoughts or feelings, they are only heard once, however when they are written, they can be read several times by several different people.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream Speech” was put into writing and had a huge effect in the U.S. The Constitution of the United States is a form of writing that works as the guidelines of our nation. All of the readings that we read this week by Thoreau, Gandhi, and king were very powerful pieces of writing that enacted social change. They all wrote their opinions and now we are able to read and think about what they wrote. They’re writings can effect our opinions and make us think about what’s right and what’s wrong.
Other written pieces that somewhat enact social change are children’s fables. Little Red Riding Hood is a story that was written by someone and is still used today to teach children not to talk to strangers. The Three Little Pigs was written to show children that if you take your time on something, it would be worth it in the end. These writings are fun and effective ways to teach children what to do and what not to do.
All in all, I agree that writing has the power to enact social change. Some people are better at writing than at speaking and by writing they can effectively share their ideas. By sharing ideas people can learn from each other and help each other. Writing is a big part of society and will continue to be as long as society exists.

The Price of a Child- No Freedom For Me
“Damn it Ginnie!”
He’d neva yell’d at me befoe. Not like dis.
“I trusted you! I was kind to you! I loved you!”
To me this was a good thing and a bad thing. I was glad that Etta and Mattie had gained their freedom but I was not so lucky. I’m sure they can survive on they own and I’m happy to be with my Bennie boy, I jest wish I coulda gotten freedom from my master Pryor.
“And my own son, how could he leave me. I was good to him. I left him a piece of my land so he could have something when I die… but he ran away from his own father.” He went on.
I ain’t believe everythin’ he say. He ain’t even claim Mattie as his son ‘til now. I was scared now though, I ain’t eva seen him mad like dis befoe. I ain’t know what to do or what to say.
Then he rasied his hand hugh up to his head and quickly brought it down onto my buttocks. He ain’t neva hit me befoe either. I started to cry afta holdin’ it back eva since I had to leave my children.
“I can’t get rid of you, I love you too much. I don’t want to get rid of my only other son but by selling him I think that will punish you enough for trying to betray me. I’ll just have to see what the price of a child his age is.”
“Please! Please sir! Don’t do that to me! I already loss two of ma children I cant bare to lose the third! Ill do anything!” I had to speak up.

“How could I do that to you?! How could I do that to you?! How could you betray me and try to run away from me?! I thought we had something. I really felt something between us…”
Now he tryna make me feel guilty. He say he loves me buh he has a bad way of showin’ it. Cooper neva treated me like this. He neva made me wanna leave him.”
“You sayin’ you love me massa Pryor?”
“Yes Ginnie, I love you.”
“Wit all do respect massa, buh if you love me you coulda showed it betta, like hoe Cooper did.”
“Cooper… damn nigger hasn’t seen you in years, hasn’t come back you or nothin’. Yet you still love him. Why Ginnie? Why can’t you love me? I treated you better then I treated any of my slaves”
“’Cause massa, I will always be the slave and you will always be the massa. You own me. You own my children, your children.”
“Aww Ginnie is that what this is about? Oh baby, I’ll free you; just promise me you will stay with me. I’ll get our kids back, I’ll do anything, just love me Ginnie.”
“Massa I can’t do that. There is no relationship here. Treat me like lover stead of a sex slave and maybe I could but you will never be as good as Cooper. He wasn’t able to save me but you are. You coulda been betta to me. I coulda loved you too. Buh I think you a sick man and I ain’t eva gon love you, sir.”
He looked at me with sincere eyes, like he neva had befoe. For a seond I felt kinda bad for ‘im, den I came to ma senses.
He left me in the wagon and went into his house. I stayed there the whole night, deciding on if I should run or stay. I was ‘fraid he’d kill me if he caught me again, or kill Bennie if he didn’t. So I stayed. It was one of the longest nights I had in a while.

I wrote an alternate to the story. I made it as if Ginnie was not able to escape and Etta and Mattie were. I changed the meaning of the title to that as if Pryor wanted to sell Bennie for the best price he could get.
A little something extra:
Getting raped by my master-dignity
Ticket to freedom-my son
Ability to read and write-pretending not to hate my master
Getting my child back and being a part of his life-priceless
